Reba McEntire is Reba’s debut major label release by Phonogram/Mercury Records. Her first single, “I Don't Want to Be a One Night Stand,” a cover of Jennifer Warnes's success song “Right Time of the Night,” the smash song “Angel in Your Arms” by soup group “Hot,” the Ray Price hit song "Invitation to the Blues," written by Roger Miller, and the Patsy Cline hit song “Why Can't He Be You” were all included on this album.

Reba signed with Mercury in November 1975 under producer Glenn Keener, who recorded one song with her in January 1976 in Nashville: "I Don't Want To Be A One Night Stand". "I Don't Want To Be A One Night Stand", was released as a single, climbing the country charts in May 1976 to peak at number 88. During this album cycle, McEntire married in June and graduated from college in December. Mercury fired Keener during a period of downsizing, and McEntire was shifted to producer Jerry Kennedy. Kennedy supervised further recording sessions in September of that same year and in April of 1977.

“I’m Not Your Kind Of Girl”, written by Glenn Sutton and Red Steagall, was the “B-Side” of the “I Don’t Want To Be A One Night Stand” single, and has remained unreleased since that original release.

The second single from the album, "(There's Nothing like the Love) Between A Woman And A Man," peaked at number 86 in March 1977, while the third single, "Glad I Waited Just For You," charted at number 88 in August.
