My Kind of Country, Reba’s eighth studio album, was released on October 15, 1984, and marked her second studio album for MCA Records.
Working with Don “Dirt” Lanier, then Director of A&R for MCA Records, the album gave Reba her first opportunity to choose the songs she wanted to record and take greater control of her own sound. My Kind of Country became her highest-charting album at the time, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, and has since been certified Gold by the RIAA.
The album produced two No. 1 country singles, “How Blue” and “Somebody Should Leave.” Reba later performed “Somebody Should Leave” when she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on January 14, 1986.
Another track from the album, “It’s Not Over (If I’m Not Over You),” was first recorded by Vern Gosdin and released in 1982. Mark Chesnutt later recorded the song for his 1992 album, Longnecks & Short Stories, featuring backing vocals from Alison Krauss and Vince Gill. The recording reappeared on Chesnutt’s 1997 album, Thank God for Believers, and was released as a single in 1998.
My Kind of Country also holds a unique distinction in Reba’s catalog: it is the only album she released prior to 2009 to receive a Dolby Atmos mix for release on Apple Music.

Heritage, heartfelt feelings, emotions and legends mean a lot to me and I want to express all of these things to you in this album. Starting with the front cover; the American Flag, God's Beautiful Mountains and my National Finals Rodeo Belt Buckle, to the back cover, new breed of country.
That leads us inside to where the music comes from the past and the present. Where it will pull at all emotions and those heart felt feelings just like it pulled at mine when I sang them. All of us along with the best dad-blame musicians had a great time working, selecting, singing, mixing and picking these songs.
I think you'll find the legends and heritage without any problem.
All of these things, along with a lot of encouragement especially from MCA, Bill Carter, Kathy Woods, my band and crew, my fans, and especially my family, was the inspiration for this album.
Country music has been hard to define in the last few years. So anymore, when anyone asks me, "What kind of country are you singing?," I can honestly say, "My kind of country!"
